Project Overview: Active Harmonic Filter for the CUHK Library Building
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a top-ranked university in Asia, founded in 1963. CUHK has a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity and bring together China and the West. Its teachers and students come from around the world, and its graduates are connected through an extensive global alumni network.
The CUHK Library Building has the electrical characteristics of a commercial facility. Its distribution system supplies numerous nonlinear loads, including lighting, computers, and air-conditioning equipment. These loads can generate significant harmonic distortion, particularly third-order harmonics. Switching power supplies in LED lighting and variable-frequency drives (VFDs) in the air-conditioning system are major sources of these harmonics. Excessive third-order harmonic current can overheat conductors, increase the risk of electrical fires, interfere with communication systems, reduce power factor, and increase reactive power demand. To address these issues, an active harmonic filter solution was integrated into the building’s power distribution system.
Sinava Power was honored to participate in the mechanical and electrical (M&E) work for the Library Building in early 2024. The project required four Sinava Power 360A Active Harmonic Filter units in a freestanding configuration to mitigate harmonic distortion. The specifications were approved by WSP, the project’s engineering consultant. Because space in the power distribution and control room was limited, Sinava Power customized the cabinet dimensions to 800 × 800 × 2,000 mm and installed four rear-mounted cooling fans for heat dissipation. Sinava Power completed the on-site installation in May 2024 and commissioning in October 2024. All four 360A units were successfully commissioned and are now supporting stable operation at the CUHK Library Building.

Power Quality Challenges in Commercial Buildings
Modern commercial buildings and institutional facilities often experience serious power quality problems because of the widespread use of nonlinear electrical equipment.
Common sources of harmonic distortion include:
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
HVAC systems
LED lighting systems
Data centers and servers
UPS systems
Computers and office electronics
Elevators and escalators
Intelligent automation systems
These devices generate harmonic currents that distort electrical waveforms and negatively impact the power system.
In the CUHK Library project, electrical measurements identified excessive harmonic current distortion, particularly third-order harmonics, causing:
Increased transformer heating
Neutral conductor overheating
Electrical equipment stress
Reduced system efficiency
Potential risks to electrical reliability
Power quality instability
For buildings requiring stable and reliable electricity, implementing an effective harmonic distortion solution becomes essential.
Why Active Harmonic Filters Are Important for Commercial Buildings
An Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) is one of the most advanced technologies for harmonic mitigation and power quality improvement.
Unlike passive harmonic filters, an active harmonic filter dynamically detects harmonic currents in real time and injects opposite compensation currents to cancel harmonics instantly.
Benefits of Active Harmonic Filters
Real-time harmonic compensation
Effective suppression of second- to 50th-order harmonics
Improved electrical system reliability
Reduced transformer and cable overheating
Lower energy losses
Dynamic reactive power compensation
No resonance risk compared with passive filters
Better compliance with IEEE 519 harmonic limits
For commercial facilities such as libraries, hospitals, universities, office buildings, airports, shopping malls, and data centers, installing an active harmonic filter for commercial buildings helps ensure stable electrical operation and long-term equipment protection.

How Active Harmonic Filters Improve Power Quality
An active harmonic filter works by continuously analyzing electrical waveforms and detecting unwanted harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads.
The system instantly produces inverse harmonic currents that neutralize distortion before it spreads through the electrical network.
This process provides several advantages:
1. Harmonic Reduction
The AHF significantly reduces total harmonic distortion (THD), minimizing harmonic current levels in the electrical system.
2. Improved Equipment Protection
Reducing harmonics protects:
Transformers
Switchgear
Capacitors
Motors
UPS systems
Sensitive electronic devices
This helps reduce maintenance costs and extend equipment lifespan.
3. Better Energy Efficiency
Lower harmonic distortion means reduced energy losses and improved system efficiency, supporting lower operating costs.
4. Stable Building Operation
For facilities like libraries and educational institutions, stable electricity is critical. The active harmonic filter system helps maintain uninterrupted operation of lighting, HVAC systems, elevators, and digital equipment.

FAQ: Active Harmonic Filter Solutions
What is an active harmonic filter?
An active harmonic filter (AHF) is an intelligent power quality device that detects and eliminates harmonic currents in real time to improve electrical system stability and efficiency.
Why are harmonic filters important in commercial buildings?
Commercial buildings use many nonlinear electrical loads that generate harmonics. Harmonic filters help reduce distortion, prevent overheating, improve reliability, and protect electrical equipment.
What causes harmonic distortion?
Harmonic distortion is commonly caused by nonlinear equipment such as VFDs, UPS systems, LED lighting, HVAC systems, elevators, and computers.
What is the difference between active harmonic filters and passive harmonic filters?
An active harmonic filter dynamically compensates harmonics in real time and avoids resonance problems, while passive filters are fixed-frequency solutions with limited flexibility.
How do I choose the right active harmonic filter?
The correct AHF size depends on harmonic levels, electrical load characteristics, and system capacity. A professional harmonic analysis is recommended.
